TAMARA RADFORD'S WESTON CHARITY RIDE
The Weston Beach Race has a long tradition of supporting charities, and many of the competitors who take to the grid for this year's event will be riding to raise money for their own favourite charitable cause.
Over the 26 years of the Weston Beach Race, the amount of money raised for charity runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds. One rider who is looking to increase that amount this year is Tamara Radford, who should be instantly recognisable in the quad race, as she'll be dressed all in pink to promote breast cancer awareness, and to raise money for Breast Cancer Research.
"This year I'm riding the Weston Beach Race to raise awareness of breast cancer, in remembrance of my Grandma, who was diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas," explained Tamara. "Sadly she died in May this year, on the morning of the British Championship round at Duns, where I was competing. I promised her a trophy, and to take it to her at the hospital; I got second overall that day but, unfortunately, she never knew."
"I wanted to give something back so that others don't have to go through what my Grandma did. I've love riding at Weston, and I've competed in the quad race for the past two years. Riding this year in aid of Breast Cancer Research seemed like a good way to increase awareness of a charity that are doing a lot to combat breast cancer in this country," added Tamara.
Beach Race organiser, and Director of RHL Activities Limited, Gareth Hockey, is a staunch supporter of charity fundraising at Weston, having competed in aid of various charities himself over the years.
"Weston has always been used to raise money for various charities, and it's a tradition that we're very keen to continue," declared Hockey. "Not only does it bring in money for a lot of worthy causes, it also adds to the spectacle of the race because the charity riders go to a lot of effort to promote their chosen cause. We've seen all sorts of costumes at the beach race, and they get more outlandish and impressive every year."
"I wish Tamara the best of luck in the quad race. She's competed for the past two years, so she knows just how tough it will be, but hopefully she'll have a good race and raise plenty of cash for Breast Cancer Awareness in the process," concluded Hockey.
